Program Description

Body

This workshop is designed to give players a quick handle on the basics of various tunings and to encourage experimentation. Sessions will include instruction on chord forms, fingering technique and popular songs that feature alt tunings. Take your six-string technique into uncharted territory with tips, hacks and a theory on alt tuning.

Do you ever get bored with the sound of your acoustic guitar? Does it ever feel like you are in a rut, playing the same old chords and picking patterns? Alternate guitar tunings have the potential to jump start your playing and spark your creative process.

Our series will introduce players to the world of alt tunings, including Open Major Tunings, CGCFGC and CFCEAC. Alt tunings can enhance the tonal range of your instrument by providing different voicings for chords and expanded harmonic relationships between open strings.

For guitarists of all experience levels; basic barre chord proficiency is recommended.

Workshop facilitator Eric Slagle has played guitar for four decades. He switched to alt tunings about 15 years ago after borrowing a collection of Hawaiian slack key guitar recordings from the library.
